Blood2collect: collect and post your own blood sample
What if you no longer had to go to the doctor for a blood test? It will soon no longer be a fiction. This is because KU Leuven is joining forces with engineering firm Comate to further develop an innovative technology whereby a patient can take a blood sample at home, in a user-friendly and painless way, himself via a finger prick.
The right amount of blood is automatically precisely measured, transferred to a piece of paper and dried in less than five minutes. And all that in a single cartridge the size of a bank card that the patient finally sends himself via regular mail to a clinical lab for analysis.
A revolutionary method that can be applied all over the world and is very efficient. Especially in developing countries, this represents a huge advance, as blood samples there cannot always be transported under the right conditions. The technology is not yet market-ready. To that end, KU Leuven's Biosensors group and engineering firm Comate will jointly develop a prototype with a view to large-scale production.
