By-product streams

Every day, the food industry generates large volumes of by-products, residues released during production. In Flemish Brabant, companies, governments, and research institutions are joining forces to maximize the use of these residual streams. The result? Economic and ecological benefits, and a stronger, more circular food chain.

Key by-product streams in our region include whey from the dairy sector, spent grain from breweries, fruit and vegetable residues from retail, and process water from industrial food production.

Through Smart Hub Food, we are committed to valorizing these streams and actively support the following initiatives:

  • Tiense Watervelden: Purifying residual water from sugar production to achieve drinking water quality.
  • Circular Food Hub SAAMO (Food Loops): Rescuing food surpluses from waste and improving access to healthy food for socially vulnerable groups.
  • Innovative use of broken rice: Smoofl and Blankedale collaborate to transform broken rice into creative products such as puffed dog snacks.
